Helpful Tips for Navigating Thanksgiving in Early Recovery

Published by Mike Beltowsky

At Gateway Recovery Center, we acknowledge for many, Thanksgiving is a time of celebration, family, and gratitude. However, for those with substance use disorder (SUD), the holiday can bring unique challenges, such as navigating family dynamics, managing stress, or resisting triggers. If you’re facing these difficulties, know that you are not alone. Recovery is a journey, and it’s okay to take things one step at a time.

Here are some helpful tips to support you through Thanksgiving while prioritizing your recovery and well-being:

1. Plan Ahead: Having a plan can help you feel more prepared and in control. Before attending any gatherings:

  • Identify potential triggers and think of ways to handle them.
  • Decide on your response if offered substances or asked about your recovery.
  • Have an exit strategy in case the situation becomes overwhelming.

2. Surround Yourself with Supportive People: If possible, spend Thanksgiving with people who understand and respect your recovery journey. Whether it’s family, friends, or a recovery support group, being with those who uplift you can make a big difference.

3. Stay Connected to Your Recovery Network: Recovery doesn’t take a holiday. Reach out to your sponsor, attend a meeting, or connect with your support group. Many organizations offer virtual or in-person meetings specifically during the holidays, so you can feel supported wherever you are.

4. Create New Traditions: Thanksgiving is a great time to create new, healthy traditions that don’t revolve around substance use. Consider activities like:

  • Volunteering at a local shelter or food drive.
  • Organizing a gratitude circle where everyone shares what they’re thankful for.
  • Hosting a sober Thanksgiving with like-minded friends.

5. Focus on Gratitude: Even in difficult times, practicing gratitude can help shift your mindset. Take a moment to reflect on what you’re thankful for, whether it’s the progress you’ve made, the support you’ve received, or the opportunity for a fresh start.

6. Practice Self-Care: It’s okay to put yourself first. If attending a gathering feels too stressful, it’s perfectly fine to skip it. Instead, spend the day doing something that brings you peace, like watching a favorite movie, cooking a special meal for yourself, or simply relaxing.

7. Avoid Risky Situations: If certain events or individuals are likely to jeopardize your recovery, it’s best to steer clear. Set boundaries and remember that protecting your sobriety is your top priority.

8. Reach Out for Help if Needed: The holidays can bring unexpected emotions. If you find yourself struggling, don’t hesitate to reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or professional for support. You are not alone, and help is always available.

9. Remember: Progress Over Perfection: Recovery is a process, not a race. If you encounter challenges during Thanksgiving, remind yourself that it’s okay to stumble. What matters most is how you pick yourself up and continue moving forward.

10. Celebrate Your Strength: Take pride in the steps you’ve taken toward recovery. The holidays are an opportunity to acknowledge your resilience and remind yourself that every effort you make is worth it.
